Until February 12, 2010 Schmidla & Voss Galerie in Cologne presents in a solo-exhibition works by the artist Geert Westphal under the title "framing".

Westphal’s images are made up of pictures. Akin to fragments of a larger context, the individual elements join together the composition. Thus the images intertwine and seem to recreate a scene. The raw material however, from which these images are created, is a video recording in each case. In his video clips, Geert Westphal digs beneath the surfaces of goings-on and in doing so, attempts to establish a trace. With a penchant for public spaces, it is the coming and going and the vague and undefined events, which reflect his observations. The notion of motivation could still be perceived though, as a question based on the inner flow of these images.

It seems something happened - the thing moved superposition of movement and creates a difference. It fits the image of a spatial context in which individual moments in time penetrate each other. Like building blocks appear from the video frames and correspondingly easy to understand the complex sculptural form - or pictorial composition - rhythmic or musical performance - depending on how we deal with these images: with ink printed on canvas and glassy film in almost material loose transparency.

Geert Westphal was born in 1956 in Windhoek (Namibia) and raised in Hamburg. From 1978 - 1983 he studied Liberal Art at the Hamburg University of Fine Arts with Franz Erhard Walther, and meanwhile HdK Berlin, subsequently Basic Studies (medicine) in Cologne. Since1984 Westphal has his Studio in Cologne. Geert Westphal lives and works in Cologne/Hamburg
