Accompanying the DMY International Design Festival Berlin 2009 the fashion label A.D.Deertz started a series of events and exhibitions - A.D.Deertz & Friends - with the furniture- and product-designer Rainer Spehl. Wibke Deertz, the creative mind behind A.D.Deertz and Rainer Spehl support and stimulate each other for its creative projects since a couple of years. Both, designing the A.D.Deertz flagship-store in Kastanienallee that opened in April (see article regarding A.D.Deertz) and the exhibition with selected design products by Rainer Spehl (until June 20, 2009 at the A.D.Deertz flagship-store) are highlights of the two creatives’ collaboration.
Using the A.D.Deertz-location for Spehl’s design exhibition forms an intellectual bridge between the creative disciplines fashion, product- and furniture-design. Both, Deertz and Spehl understand the creative process as a holistic one. Their works have deep roots in the art-, club- and music-scene inspired by artists, photographers and musicians. They are always created in a close cultural context. Such a common understanding of the creative process connects both creatives. With Spehl’s design exhibition A.D.Deertz starts a series of events to inspire its customers with outstanding design ideas, contents and opinions.
Rainer Spehl is an independent furniture- and product-designer in Berlin who designs and produces customized products mainly for private clients. The creative process forms the underlying idea for Spehl’s creations - objects with clear statements and aesthetics. Beside the material, details and the surface, that give the character to all objects, its function is most important. Spehl’s work is characterized by getting the urge to point his designs and by the patience to work as long as his product is ‘ready’. The use and combination of classical materials like wood or concrete gives Spehl’s objects its unique form and character. Rainer Spehl has a comprehensive knowledge of processing technologies as well as the ability to individually go into each location to create interior designs and products that work in an intuitive way. All of them are individual creations and do not follow a schema or taken out of a kit of components. This leads to the creation of fashion-stores like KONK or the A.D.Deertz flagship-store and furniture in public spaces like seating furniture and bistro tables in a mall at Alexanderplatz which he designed together with Alexis Oehler in 2008.
