On the fourth day of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin, ic! Berlin, specialist in desirable eyewear, presented its new collection in cooperation with Bo Van Melskens. The 37 year-old Danish designer created three hip styles in her signature female dandy look – after all, she has to keep her imaginary friend, muse and label-mate Bo happy. With her in mind, Sarah Elbo, as the designer is actually called, set up the label Sarah Heartbo in 2004. Four years later, when Bo had matured into her thirties, the label’s name was changed to Bo Van Melskens.

The collection is a vibrant blend of vintage inspirations, contemporary colours and ic!’s indestructible frame design. The pieces, which are handmade in Berlin, can all be completely dissembled into their individual parts and put back together again. The secret is in the metal. Those who are curious to see how they are created can actually take a look behind the scenes at the entire production process in the “Backfabrik” in Berlin Mitte.

But the collection was not only about special specs. Sarah Elbo created an altar in the backroom of the ic! store in Max Beer Strasse at which we were invited to purge ourselves of old vices and invoke new joys. How did it work? You simply wrote your unwanted emotions on a piece of paper, dug a hole and buried the paper. Then lit a candle, placed it on the shrine and made a wish.

It’s probably still too early to say if it worked. But while we are waiting for our hearts’ desire to come true, we can look to the future with confidence in Bo’s creations. Choose rose or grey because, as she says, “If sun or tears – be prepared! ‘Cos you never know what this day will bring before it’s over.”
