Young Berlin-based designer Michael Sontag seems to be following his path with Zen-like resolve. His autumn/winter 2010/2011 collection, shown in the marquee on Bebelplatz at the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin, demonstrated the reduced but unconventional style that made him winner of last year’s Becks Fashion Experience.
Sontag drapes and tailors luxe materials such as cashmere and silk directly on the dummy. Working exclusively with mono-toned fabrics and discreet colours such as sand, tan and khaki, attention is drawn to his elaborate, almost sculptural silhouettes, with particularly striking solutions evident in shoulders and back panels.
His excellent workmanship allows dresses to fall in gently flowing drapes. Roomy pieces that conceal more than they reveal are partly reminiscent of Japanese kimonos and continue a theme from Sontag’s previous season collection. His is a purist, individual look with staying power.
Michael Sontag studied at Berlin’s Weissensee art college and gained practical experience at c.neeon, Kenzo and Givenchy
